FAQ

faq1Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. What file format and quality are the recordings? We use a lossless file format called AIFF for our uncompressed format.  Its similar to WAV, but from the folks at Apple.  It is sampled at 44.1kHz, just like CDs and is mono (both channels are identical.  Our compressed option is AIFC (C is for Compressed), but it still is very high quality since it is only compressed at a 4:1 ratio.
  2. Can I play my recordings in iTunes? YES. Play the files in iTunes, on your iPhone, in the Quicktime player, or even in a browser.  You can use iTunes to encode them as MP3′s if you like.
  3. Why don’t you offer AAC or MP3 recording as an option? 2 reasons. While the iPhone is a powerful device, it is not powerful enough to quickly encode MP3 files on the phone.  We had it working, but the experience was quite painful due to long waits and significant battery drain.  The second reason was the deal breaker – licensing fees for the codecs.  Both the MP3 and AAC codecs require prohibitively expensive licensing fees – many thousands of dollars a year and a buck or two per unit.  Ouch.
  4. Can I podcast using this app? Yes, but you will need to do a little work on a computer first. Our goal all along has been to provide tools to allow anyone to podcast using only the iPhone – from your mouth to subscribing via iTunes.  But we are not there yet.  We are working on a feature that will make podcasting drop dead simple….. stay tuned!
